Bon Dance Schedule

A number of Hawaiians who are of Japanese descent participate in the Island’s Bon Dances. . This Technicolor festival is marked by vibrant kimono, bright lanterns, and booming taiko drums that awaken and welcome ancestors back to this world. You are welcome to come watch. Make a note of the following dates:

June 27-28, Waimea Higashi Hongwanji Mission, 7:30 P.M.

July 5, Kauai Museum Mini Bon Dance 1: P.M.

July 11-12, Kauai Soto Mission Zenshuji (Hanapepe) 7:30 P.M.

July 18-19, Koloa Jodo Mission, 7:30 P.M.

July 25-26, West Kauai Hongwanji (Hanapepe) 7:30 P.M.

August 1-2, Lihue Hongwanji Mission, 7:30 P.M.

August 8-9, Waimea Shingon Mission, 7:30 P.M.

August 14, Mahelona Hospital, 6: P.M.

You are also welcome to get the Kauai Beach Guide iPhone app, 99¢ in iTunes. Although it does not show where the Bon Dances are held, it does show which beaches are life guarded, which need care, and which are not advisable.  There’s a daily ocean report plus weather, GPS, info on facilities at each beach, and much more. We want you to be safe, so remember the slogan,  “When in doubt, don’t go out.”

Poipu Beach, South Shore

This is Poipu – a beautiful, lifeguarded beach, particularly safe for children in the baby pool.
