“Kauai Past and Present:  Applying traditional resource management to contemporary conservation practices,”
by Kawika Winter, Ph.D., Director of Limahuli Garden, NTBG.
An ethnobotanist specializing in identifying the interaction between people and plants, particularly ancient Hawaiians, their land use practices and the native species they cultivated, Dr. Winter has done advanced work in relating botany and human history in Pacific cultures, particularly the awa and kalo plants. The scientific and statistical data he collects today are keys to adapting traditional practices to meeting the needs of modern land and resource conservation.
